Nowadays, portable equipment and laptops become smaller and need more energy, which lead to the need for rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. Using lighter lithium and carbon for the electrodes, the batteries became more compact and lightweight. Also the performance is superior to traditional rechargeable batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries often used in laptops are different from primary lithium batteries used in cameras. From it's invention in 1990 to now the lithium-ion battery has evolved as the superior power source for a majority of applications. Lithium-ion batteries have never been as popular as today, which is primarily based on the explosive growth of the consumer electronics market.

The higher the energy density of a battery, the smaller and lightweight it is. The exponentially higher energy density of li-ion batteries allows the development of very small and light portable devices as demanded by modern consumer electronics markets. Industries like aerospace, automotive and defense also have applications where the high energy density of Li-ion batteries is needed.

Higher reliability and lower assembly costs are a result of a reduction of the number of these high voltage cells being combined in one pack.

It is not only one reason that makes these cells to superior seller in a fast growing market. Among the many benefits are the higher energy density and higher voltage per cell, but also a great performance under low temperature, improved life cycle, simpler battery management, less self discharge, easy recharge and more less harmful parts for the environment.

In lithium-ion batteries there is also no memory effect, so that is i not necessary to fully discharge them before they are recharged. Being able to be charged and discharged several hundred times, these batteries have a much longer life cycle.

Also li-ion batteries can easily be build in different shapes and sizes and therefore can be used in various devices.

But if something seems so perfect, there has to be a downside. The only known problem is, that they can burst into flames in very rare occasions, maybe twice in a million.

In the end, these li-ion batteries are the best, most powerful batteries on the market and can be used for most applications.

I have been working with battery driven vehicles and devices for ages. The short life of expensive batteries has always frustrated me, that's why I now recondition batteries for my own use to save money or to even make money by selling them.
