Kangaroo Island tours can take you on 4 wheel drive adventures, along walking trails, through the islands national parks and reserves, or even into the underwater parks of this remarkable, unspoilt island. Nestled just 16km off the coast of South Australia, the island is home to some of the most beautiful nature and wildlife in the country. With a good road network and regular ferry links to the mainland, there are plenty of options when it comes to visiting the island, whether you want an active weekend away, or a more leisurely paced tour of the island.
Tours of the island
Visiting the natural wonders of Kangaroo Island can be done in a number of ways.
Walking tours - Walking tours are available in the national parks and can be short tours along relatively flat stretches over a couple of hours, through to overnight tours which involve extended hikes over many kilometres and taking in more rugged terrain.
4 Wheel Drive Tours - Touring the island via four wheel drive provides the opportunity to see a bit of the country in true outback touring style! These types of tours will usually be in groups of 8 to 10 people, which could be ideal for family holidays with group members of all ages.
Coach Tours - Kangaroo Island tours in coaches are a much more leisurely option and provide the opportunity to see the island at a more gentle pace. This is great if you are unable to take on the physical challenges of hiking the islands nature trails, but don't want to miss the chance to see the magnificent wildlife.
Underwater sights - The natural wonders of the sea can be seen in the coastal waters around Kangaroo Island. Taking a guided tour is a good option if you are less experienced in snorkelling or scuba diving, as you have the guide with you in case you are unfamiliar with the ocean currents and want a more experienced diver to accompany you.
Getting There
Kangaroo Island has a ferry link to the mainland which leaves from Port Jervis, roughly one hour from Adelaide. If you take a coach tour, you may find that it is possible to join the tour from a central location in Adelaide and then get to the island with the tour group. Other tours might require you to make your own way to the island, which is easily done by driving and using the ferry to reach the island. For those who prefer to fly, there are also air connections available to reach the island.
Kangaroo Island Tours can be a wonderful way to show the family more of the Australian countryside and to experience a unique island landscape of the southern coast of the country. The island is easy to reach from the mainland and it makes it perfect for those who like to travel in their own vehicle or take coach tours to make getting around easy. For overseas visitors, this is a unique experience that is not to be missed.
A tourist destination that is becoming more popular in Australia is Kangaroo Island. There is now a wider variety of Kangaroo Island accommodation available, from rustic to luxury.
