After the winter holidays, there tends to be a long and drab part of the year until the sunshine returns and the flowers start blooming. This is a great time of year to read, and to try out some new crafts and hobbies. An excellent hobby that anyone young or mature can enjoy is calligraphy. Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing that utilizes special calligraphy pens to enable the artist to produce fancy lettering effects. You can find sets of calligraphy fountain pens or simply get a single calligraphy pen to start you on the way to wintertime fun.
Calligraphy is an inexpensive hobby as well as one that adds grace to any type of written correspondence. After you get a calligraphy fountain pen, you will need some ink, paper and an instruction manual. These texts can often be found in your public library or can be purchased.
Children learn penmanship at a very early age in school, and you can see even at that young age, some writers have a gift for penmanship, and others practice until they become equally adept. Since it is based on your own written language, after you learn how to do it, you can dress up any event invitation or announcement with your calligraphy fountain pen and make the penmanship even more flamboyant.
As you begin, you will see that calligraphy pen sets consist of calligraphy fountain pens with nibs. These are triangular-shaped points at the writing end of the pen, the tip of which may be flat or round, and both are used with calligraphy pens to give special stylistic effects to the letter writing. The pens in calligraphy pen sets may have nibs that are directly dipped into an ink bottle in order to write, or the calligraphy fountain pens may contain a plastic cartridge inside the barrel of the pen that holds the ink and releases it so that it flows properly down to the nib and across the page as you write. You may use primarily black ink to write your letters, but you can also add color as well with colored inks. This is often done in calligraphy, and most especially to the first letter of the first word in the first paragraph of every section of a work, such as a book chapter. These primary letters are especially ornate and have many wonderful flourishes that are detailed and exquisite.
