The idea of a featherbed is to provide an extra layer of cushion and loft to sleep on. Adding a featherbed on your bed is a great way to boost the softness overall. Feather beds come with a variety of different shell constructions in order to satisfy the different levels of comfort. There is bag style meaning the feather bed acts just like a giant pillow on your bed with no stitching in the middle – thus allowing the fill to float freely. The channel construction has either horizontal or vertical columns sewn through the top and bottom of the fabric or ‘shell’. Lastly the baffle box style has a thin fabric that joins the top and bottom layers of the shell which allows the fill to touch along the sew lines. The baffle box provides more loftiness than the sewn through styles and is the easiest to take care of simply requiring a fluffing about once a week.
It is important to realize that by adding a featherbed, the sleeper now has a new layer of insulation under them and therefore might need a lighter comforter to balance the warmth factor through out the night. This added layer of insulation might make you question whether the featherbed is appropriate for the summer months. It is absolutely normal to be able to use a featherbed during the summer months. There is such a thing as an 'All Seasons' reversible featherbed. This summer feather bed has a down top side for winter months and a cool touch Tencel side for the summer months. Tencel Lyocell is considered to be a miracle fabric, continuously offering a silky yet cool touch. Tencel Lyocell offers great moisture wicking in the fabric itself thus giving a cool feeling for the warmer summer months.
Because most mattresses use a poly cotton fabric, they can often feel warm against contact. Furthermore some beds or even bed toppers like memory foam can cause an extra amount of surface warmth. By using a featherbed in the warmer months you are adding a layer of breathable material between your body and the mattress or topper. Whether it is the cotton ‘winter’ side or the Tencel ‘summer’ side you will benefit from the extra breathability.
The easy to distinguish color coded piping shows which side is appropriate for the current season. The red piping is to be used for the winter months while the blue piping is to be used for the summer months. The top, ¾ inch in height is filled with White Goose Down. The 12 inch box construction keeps the fill from shifting too much. This luxurious Down Top provides the perfect winter feather bed. The cool touch Tencel bottom provides the proper moisture control for the summer months along with adding the appropriate cool factor. The ¾ inch in height bottom has the 8 inch quilted diamond construction which also keeps the fill from shifting. This makes the blue piping bottom the perfect summer feather bed. The middle of the feather bed is 3 inches in height and consists of a blend of 5/95 White Goose Down & Feathers with Soft Down Alternative Polyester. The Channel construction allows the fill to shift appropriately while still providing balanced coverage.
The key to keeping your summer feather bed lofty lies in the fluffing of the featherbed once a week. The appropriate way to fluff the bed would be as follows: start on one side of the bed and fold one side to the middle then allow the featherbed to fold back and give it a good shake. Repeat the same process on the other side along with the headboard and footboard areas.
