Links are the currency of the internet. A good incoming link can increase your traffic, your profile, and your search engine ranking. The right link in the right place can turn into actual revenue through increased business. Signing up for a site analytics service, such as Google Analytics, can be a great way to monitor who is linking to you. It’s easy to integrate into your website builder and gives you all the knowledge you need for a good link building strategy. But what do you do if you get yourself signed up for your site analytics and you notice that no one at all is linking to you? Panic!
Don’t be disheartened. When people build their first website they often think that they will automatically start generating links. But remember that there are millions of websites out there and it is difficult for people to find you – it is links that will get people visiting your site. Here are some tips that could help you out if you’re asking why no one links to your pages.
- You Aren’t Linking To Anyone Else
This is internet faux pas number one. You have got to link to other people. You can’t just expect to sit there, for people to somehow find your website and for them to be so dazzled by it that they put up a link to you. Your first links will come via backlinking. Once you have linked to someone else they will see, in their own site analytics, that they are starting to get traffic from your site. They will visit your site to check it out – if they like it you might get a link back.
- You Aren’t Engaging
Web 2.0 is all about community engagement. Whatever niche you are in there is bound to be a community for it on the internet. Set yourself up with a Twitter account, create a forum, or a Facebook page, and start interacting with other people. When you start to build up relationships you’ll see that people will start linking to you without you even having to ask.
- You Aren’t Asking
Stuck for links? Ask your friends, family and colleagues to link to you from their own website. Tell them that you will link back to them. There’s nothing wrong with people promoting one another and helping each other out, especially when you are first starting off. You could see five links from a few friends turn into many more over the space of a year.
- You Aren’t Dynamic
A great way to encourage incoming links is to create dynamic content on your website. You could create a blog on your business website – something that many website builders will let you do. Dynamic content means that you have more opportunities to engage your potential customers. Whereas someone might visit your website once to see a product, a blog will have them coming back for more and more. It also gives you the opportunity to create link bait articles – articles that generate a lot of inbound linking.
- You Haven’t Got a Good Website
If you haven’t got a good website then no one is going to link to you. Why would they? It would make them look pretty dumb for linking to such as rubbish website as yours. A good website means good web page design and good content. Most website builders and web page design programs will help you to build a professional looking website - they could be a good place to start. If you are receiving no links it might be a good idea to have someone read your content for you. This should help you to pick up on any grammatical mistakes or silly typos that are making you look unprofessional and putting people off your website.
Bonus Tip! Avoid link building schemes or anyone who promises to get you thousands of incoming links. Google takes a dim view of things like link farms and their search engine bots are pretty good at picking up on when people are using them. Getting involved in schemes like this can have a very detrimental effect on your SEO.
