The RROD as it is sometimes called, commonly happens in the Xbox 360 game console, which can be fixed under warranty, assuming of course that your device is still covered. If not, there are some red ring of death fixes that you can do yourself to repair your Xbox 360.

The ring is on the outside of the power button of your Xbox system. It's broken into four quadrants that act like indicators. For example, the number of quadrants that light up indicate the number of game controllers that are connected to the device. However, flashing red light on any or all of the quadrants usually indicates some type of error.

You will know that you have awakened the ring of death when three of the four quadrants are flashing red once you turn on your device, with the exception of the upper right quadrant. This is what many Xbox 360 users dread the most.

The important thing when it comes to the red ring of death fixes is understanding what the flashing red lights actually mean. One of the reasons this usually happen is due to some cords or connectors of your Xbox 360 came loose or were not connected properly. You should check all the connectors of your Xbox 360 and try to turn the device on again.

Another popular reason why the red ring of death occurs is when your gaming console overheats. When the Xbox 360 overheats, or reaches high temperatures, the CPU and GPU shuts off and powers the cooling fans to full speed until the device cools down to acceptable temperatures.

So when your console suddenly shuts off and the flashing red lights commences, your device could be overheating. Another reason the red ring of death to occur is complete hardware failure. If this is the case, you will need to send it in for repair or use one of the red ring of death fixes.

If you get the RROD and if you have already tried everything you can to try to fix the problem, you need to contact Microsoft's technical support team. Microsoft will then send you a box which you will use to send your Xbox 360 console to them.

However, you need to make sure that you remove your hard drive as well as any cables connected to your gaming console, because once they have determined that it is, in fact, the Xbox 360 red ring of death, they will send you a refurbished game console without any attached cables or hard drive. So if you do not want to lose your data, remove your hard drive before you send the device to them.
