Are Torque Converters Important?

Cars with manual transmissions uses a clutch to connect the engine to the vehicle's transmissions. This connection is used to make a manual car come to a complete stop without killing the car's engine. However, for automatic cars that do not have clutches, another device is used to do this function. This device is called a torque converter.
A torque converter is a fluid coupling device used to transfer rotating power from a vehicle's internal combustion engine to a rotating driven load. Like any basic fluid coupling device, the converters takes the place of a mechanical clutch.
Perhaps the most important function of a torque converter is that it enhances the torque of the machine when there is a gap between the input and output speed of rotation. It then provides the same torque as that given by a reduction gear. Because of this capability, converters are used not only in cars but to other forms of transportation such as boats, trucks, and buses.
But like any automobile parts, torque converter parts are also subject to wear and tear. When this happens, it is inevitable that we do some torque repair or torque rebuild. One of the most common causes of torque repair is failure to prepare the crankshaft before the transmission torque converter installation. When converters are installed without removing the rust in the crankshaft and adding up grease, the torque converter clutch will be crooked up in the first bolt.
The second most common torque repair concern on converters is the existence of "whining" after installation. This usually happens when there is too much clearance between the torque converter pads and the flex plate. This causes the converter hub to be drawn too far from the pump drive resulting the gear to rock.
Last but not the least, most torque repairs are concerned with overheating. Reasons for overheating could be defective spark plugs, distributor timing off, or high level of slippage. One way of addressing this is to check for seals. Broken seals lead to leaks, and these leaks lead to poor circulation of transmission fluid.
But of course, before worrying about any torque repair scenarios, you can think of ways to upgrade the performance of your torque converter. A high performance torque converter enables the converter to perform at its best even under heavy-throttle scenarios. As soon as your vehicle hits the higher gears, the torque converter locks up and the engine and transmission become solidly coupled.
