What room in the house is the "man's" room? Before you say the bathroom, I'm talking about the place where you can work out, entertain friends, and enjoy your sports in peace. Following are some tips on how to make your "Lion's" den (i.e. guy's room) the ultimate sanctuary.
As with any room that is to be designed to fit a vision, you're going to want to decide its function. This means everything the room is to be used for. Is this a game room, sports bar, gym, home theater, or all of the above?
Next, plan the space you'll need. This is important so you don't end up stuffing all you have into this one room. Be sure to measure everything especially before buying furniture. The cabinets and tables used for storing your entertainment needs to be big enough to hold that television. A nice touch is to have a cabinet that "hides" your electronic sidepieces (e.g. DVD player, game console, and speakers).
Don't "add as you go" instead of planning. If your room is too small there is not much you can do to fix it. So, think big and plan it all before you start.
Give your room a theme and coordinate your colors throughout. Phoenix suns or Miami Dolphins fan? Here's the place to show your love. Another option is to keep your color neutral or even use wood throughout. Oak wood panels are popular in guys' rooms.
Durable surfaces like granite counters and commercial carpentry are a good idea. Your room is going to be treated roughly so it has to stand up to the treatment. If you have gym equipment, PVC materials underneath it will provide floor protection and muffle noise.
Because of all the electronics you'll undoubtedly showcase, use the expertise of an electrician so you don't overload your circuit. You'll need capacity added to your room for your big screen, gaining system, computer, etc.
You'll certainly want to have refreshments in your den (don't want to grab snacks during the game).
Forego the space consuming enclosed bar and simply install an English style serving area. Shelves will store your bottles and glasses. Don't forget the small fridge.
Be sure to provide good ventilation if you'll be smoking indoors. Most important of all, enjoy!
