Luton is a town in Bedfordshire, England, and it is well known, across the United Kingdom and other countries of the world, for its airport. The airport, known as London Luton Airport, serves London and services are operated by five airlines which are EasyJet, Monarch, RyanAir, Wiz Air and Thomson Airways. Many of these operators offer cheap flights which enable people to visit places at low cost.

The airport has a website www.london-luton.co.uk which presents information about the scheduled and charter flights that the airport serves to more than ninety different countries across the world. The website also has information about many and other matters to do with the airport. For example the website enables people to book parking at the airport from the website.

London Luton Airport is one of the five international airports that serve London. It has the distinction of being the fourth biggest air terminal that operates services for people in the London area. Number one is Heathrow, the second largest is Gatwick, and the third biggest is Stansted in Essex. Luton occupies the fourth position in the league table, and London City Airport is number five.

Most of the destinations that you can go to from London Luton Airport are within Europe. However it is also possible to get charter flights from the airport that go to various other destinations outside Europe. Such destinations include cities in the continents of Asia and Africa.

London Luton Airport has a terminal building that is constructed from glass and aluminium, and cost forty million pounds to build. It has sixty check in points, along with a range of retail facilities, including bars and restaurants, where you can while away the hours while you wait for your flight. The terminal building was officially opened at a glittering launch ceremony in the year 1999 by the Queen of England and her consort Prince Philip.

Many people will be aware of London Luton Airport, even if they have never been there. This is due to a well known television advertisement for the alcoholic drink Campari. The advertisement featured the actress Lorraine Chase and the actor Leonard Rossiter. In the advertisement, the characters are sitting next to eachother on a plane, and the lady looks particularly glamorous and sophisticated. The character played by Leonard Rossiter tries a classy chat-up line and asks the lady: "Were you truly wafted here from paradise?". The lady replies: "Nah Luton Airport" in a cockney accent that is totally unexpected and surprising from the upmarket look of her.

London Luton Airport was also the inspiration for a pop music chart topper by the group Cats UK called "Luton Airport" which was based on the famous Campari advertisement.

The comedy world also played homage to London Luton Airport. Monty Python's Flying Circus, a hilarious comedy series, had a sketch about some characters called the Piranha Brothers. In this sketch, the airport was mentioned as the venue in which one of the Piranha brothers, Dinsdale Piranha, believed that his nemesis, an enormous hedgehog called Spiny Norman spends each night after terrorising the Piranha brothers.
