Commercial Carpet installation secrets revealed
Preparation for Commercial Carpet seam and edge before installation
The majority of commercial carpets is Berber carpet, or loop pile carpets. And most of the pattern carpets are cut pile plush carpet (usually installed for restaurants, hotel and Hi-rise condos). Carpet tile require a totally different installation methods than Berber carpet and Saxony carpets.
Only professionally well trained and experienced carpet installers should be used to install commercial carpets, especially with patterned carpets, when there are seams involved.
Berber Commercial carpets require all seams to be row cut with exception to printed pattern carpets.
Be sure to row cut edges on pattern carpets and Berber carpets, trimming off a sufficient amount of rows from each side. This procedure creates a good cutting surface and removes any potential loose edges. The steps required in row cutting involve:
-
Reviewing the pattern for the correct place to trim edges.
-
Use an awl to open the tufted row, to create a cutting guide. A good seam is a strong seam
-
Use a loop pile or cushion back cutter to trim along the row,
-
be sure to replace cutting blades as often as needed.
Printed patterns commercial carpets: the only exception to row cutting seams is when installing printed carpets. Because printed carpet patterns are created on the carpet after tufting, the patterns will not necessarily follow the rows of tufts. Use a carpet metal straight edge as a guide to cut from pattern to pattern. Don not attempt to cut long distances between two patterns by pooping a chalk line. At the same time, you would not be cutting far enough into patterns that don’t s meet the line.
Using Commercial carpet Seam sealing hot melt seams:
All carpets seams must be properly sealed using a continuous bead of seam adhesive large enough to cover the primary backing, yarn bundle and secondary backing, latex backing can be seam sealed with either a solvent or non solvent based carpet seam adhesive.
Seam sealing hot melt seams: a good quality latex carpet seam adhesive should be applied to both cut edges and allowed to dry completely prior to beginning the hot melt carpet seaming process. This process is especially important for loop pile carpets.
Transition carpet edges: when finishing commercial carpets against other flooring, a transition strip or molding should be used. Carpet transitions are required to prevent severe edge damage caused by hard surface carpet cleaners and equipments as well as concentrated traffic.
Below are diagrams of the additional inherent characteristics of patterned carpet. As not all the commercial carpets arrived at the job site are perfectly straight and inline. Better call a professional carpet installer if the carpets occur in the following diagrams because they have the required tools to correct them, and the carpets factory considers them normal, not defect carpets.
