Packing your belongings for storage can be a quite a stressful task. Most self storage facilities offer packing services but if you want to do it on your own, make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to pack. It's not really that difficult as long as you plan and organize ahead of time. Let me share to you some tips on how to get started.

  1. The first thing that you have to do is to sort your things. Decide what things you want to move to the storage facility and what things will stay at home. Once you've sorted everything out, the rest of the process will be so much easier.

  2. After sorting and organizing your things, you can now buy your packing stuff. You'll need heavy duty boxes to store your things, bubble wraps to keep your fragile items from breaking, packing tapes to secure your boxes and markers for labelling.

  3. Once you're done with all the sorting and you already have your materials for packing, you can now start putting your items on the boxes. It is very important to box everything because unboxed items will accumulate dirt inside the facility. However, if you're storing huge furniture such as cabinets in the storage facility, there's no need to pack your small things in boxes. You can just place your items inside the cabinet drawers to maximize space. The following tips can help you pack your items efficiently:

  • Place the heavier items on the bottom and the lighter items on top of the box.

  • Never use plastic bags when packing. Plastic bags promote the growth of mildew and this can damage your items.

  • Store your books flat so that their spine won't get damaged.

  • Bubble wrap your fragile items to avoid them from breaking. You can also use paper to wrap your breakable items but bubble wrap is the best.

  • Label your boxes properly so that you can easily identify its contents.

  • Wipe a little oil on your items made of metal to avoid them from getting rusty.

  • Seal your boxes very well with a packing tape to avoid the contents from accumulating dust.
