Many times a family passes its worn and outdated furniture on to younger members, and these individuals must choose what to do with it. They can discard them in the rubbish, sell them to someone that understands their true value, or have them refinished and enjoy them for years to come.
In the case of fine antique furniture, the latter is certainly the best option. The value of antiques depends on the person that is choosing what to do with them. Some people do not appreciate the intrinsic value of older quality furniture, often because they have not yet acquired an eye for the detail that is present in fine furniture. This is the reason when it comes to finding a new home for old furniture it is best to never discard it in the rubbish.
Determining the true value of an old piece of furniture can often be accomplished by examining the feel of it. A quality antique furniture piece will not be flimsy and coming apart at the seams. Sure, it might be in tattered condition, and the pieces may be losing their grip on each other, but for the most part it is still in one piece. It will also have a presence, even when it could use some repair. Repairing such a piece of furniture will bring it back to a like new condition and return it to its true intrinsic value.
It is not advisable that an untrained person attempt to restore an antique piece of furniture on their own. There are a few techniques that should be applied only by a professional, and some restoration attempts will actually harm the value rather than increase it. A professional with the experience to refurbish an antique will lovingly do so in a way that will bring it back to its former glory.
Many people however, understand that fine antique furniture will enhance the look and feel of their homes. These people love the comfort and stability that can be found in furniture that has stood the test of time. Often you will find them searching through antique furniture stores for that perfect piece to add to their collection, and sometimes searching junk stores, flea markets, and garage sales for the same reason.
When antique aficionados find that truly great piece, whether the find was at an antique furniture store or some place else, adding it to their home may or may not require some restoration. It is always amazing when nothing is required to place the antique furniture in a prominent place in the home and bask in the pleasure of a good find.
This type of thing does not happen often; however, it can take place from time to time. This is when it is desirable to take the piece to the nearest antique furniture store, or another expert to have it appraised. This will reveal the actual value of the item, and help the new owner decide whether or not to have it redone.
