Thinking of going on an Irish fishing holiday? Various spots in Ireland are great as fishing destinations, and if you are looking for a great angler’s haven, you can find it on the Fermanagh Lakelands. Loughs and rivers that offer great opportunity for game fishing are abundant in the area, which are well stocked with brown trout, wild brown trout and rainbow trout. You can also catch the popular Gillaroo, Sonaghan and Ferox in the different waters. Some of the more popular loughs, fisheries and rivers in Ireland can easily be accessed in the area, including Lough Melvin and Lough Erne.
For Lough Erne, you can fish in the Upper Lough, which is located to the east of Enniskillen, or the Lower Lough, which goes west towards Belleek. Game fishing can be found mostly in the Lower Lough although trout thrive on the entire system. The Lower Lough covers an area that is 15 miles long, which is dotted with many islands and bays. Hence, you can find plenty of rocky shores and shallow water that are ideal for fishing.
Lough Melvin on the other hand can be found on the west of Fermanagh County. Along with grilse and spring salmon, three kinds of trout call it home. These are the Gillaroo, magic Sonaghan and Ferox. As one of the most famous loughs of Ireland, Lough Melvin is a favorite destination for anglers. Great trout fishing can be enjoyed throughout the season, which starts in February with the coming of the first salmon. It continues for several months, which is punctuated with the arrival of the grilse, beginning in May until July.
For springers, the most utilized method is trolling but great fly-fishing can be had for both the Gillaroo and the Sonaghan.
Aside from knowing the perfect fishing grounds for your Irish fishing holiday, there are other aspects of the trip that you should consider. These include the place to stay and the accommodations that are available there, the person or persons that you should contact once you arrive in Ireland, who is getting the best catch and where he is getting it and the shopping accommodations that are available in a particular locality.
There are many books on the topic that you could use for reference. However, most of what you need can be found online. You can browse on several online resources that are full on information on Irish fishing holiday. A particularly good resource among them is the Irish fishing board.
