Brackley is a small market town in Northamptonshire in the East Midlands of England. It has a population of around 13,300 and there are a number of facilities for the local community in the town. These include a dominoes club, a dance school and an angling club.
The Brackley & District Domino League is active in the autumn and winter. It has teams that are based in various pubs in Brackley, which include The Fox and The Manor. They also play at pubs that are outside Brackley, including the Red Lion in Evenley, The Marston Inn at Marston St Lawrence, the Stratton Arms in Turweston, and the New Inn at Middleton Cheney, and the Royal Oak in Tingewick. In addition, the team plays at sports clubs including Brackley Town Football Club and Syresham Sports Club. Dominoes or Dominos is a board game that is played with pieces that are known as bones. The idea is to match an end in a bone that you have to an end of the chain of bones that is on the board. If the player cannot create a match, they then have to take a bone from the bone yard, which is a pile of the bones that are not in play. The first player to have no more bones wins the hand.
The Moylan School of Dance is based in Brackley and provides tuition in classical ballet, along with cultural, contemporary and jazz dance styles. This is delivered by a tutor who was trained at the Royal Academy of Dance. The Dance school puts on regular performances at places like the Roxburgh Theatre and the Stanonbury Theatre in Milton Keynes. The dance school also hosts a summer theatre workshop production in which groups of students perfect a choreographed routine. Many students of the dance school go on to leading theatre schools such as the London Studio Centre, English Youth Ballet, and the Central School of Ballet in London. The Moylan School of Dance holds many of its tuition sessions at Waynflete Infants School which is in Waynflete Avenue, Brackley.
The Brackley and District Angling Club is affiliated to the Angling Trust, which is the governing body of Angling in the United Kingdom. The types of fish that are commonly caught by members of the club are the common varieties of British fresh water fish such as Pike, Carp, Tench and Bream. The angling club hosts fun days at which members of the club coach people of a wide variety of proficiencies and ages. The aim of these fun days is to show people the fun of fishing, both as a sport and a recreational activity. Some club members of the fishing club catch some whoppers which break records. These are then featured in national publications like the Anglers Mail. An example was an eighteen pound Pike that was caught by one of the members of the fishing club in St James' Lake, Brackley.
In addition to the clubs mentioned above, Brackley has a range of other clubs that enable local people to get involved with topics such as art, allotments, photography, bowling and chamber music.
