Recently global warming has become a prime concern for all countries on the globe. All most all governments on the earth are taking drastic measures to reduce Carbon emission in their countries. And these measures are applicable to all industries including that of Information Technology.
Carbon emission reduction methods
Thus the inevitable query arises: How to reduce Carbon emission?
The most common methods to reduce Carbon emission include minimizing the utilization of risky materials, maximizing energy efficiency during the product's life-cycle, enhancing the recyclable features of inoperative products and industrial wastes.
Green PC Technology
Now the question is what steps the IT industry can take to reduce carbon emission.
The answer is simple: use Green PC Technology. Green PC Technology is nothing but a personal computer technology which is low on power consumption and environment friendly. Naturally the query arises how to adopt Green PC Technology.
To answer that query, first thing to be considered is what equipments are used by the IT industry. Generally the most common machines used by the IT industry are servers, computers and related subsystems. The associated subsystems include display devices, printers, storage devices, communication and networking gadgets, etc.
Processor
The brain of a PC is its processor. The leading processor makers are designing new processors that use less power and perform much better than the previous processors. Here the main point to be considered is the desktop requirement. If the desktop requirement is high, obviously the power consumption by the processor will be also greater. Also less is the PC utilization time; the less is the power consumption. So the goal here is to minimize desktop requirements and PC utilization time.
Motherboard
Motherboard is the heart of a PC. Motherboard designers are coming up with motherboard technologies that draw less power compared to the previously designed motherboards. Latest motherboard technologies analyze the actual CPU loading and dynamically adjust power consumption and performance parameters to save energy.
Displays
Among the all components of a PC, the display, especially the CRT monitor, consumes the maximum power. LCD monitors consume much less power. A 17 inch CRT display eats up 72W, while a LCD display of the same size draws only 20W. Also LCD displays occupy less space, are classy and pleasing to eyes. Generally LCD displays use cold cathode fluorescent bulb for illumination. Nowadays some latest LCD displays use LEDs which consume less power.
Hard drives
Configurations are already available to store data while drawing less power. Hard drive manufacturers have invented energy efficient storage solutions for desktop PCs. The latest hard drives come with advanced power management systems, which minimize the power consumption during unengaged period. Nowadays external hard drives also features power management system which drives them into sleep mode while not being used.
RAM
The latest RAM chips are designed to consume much less power. Latest IRAM architecture with a combination of DRAM and a processor on the same chip eats up much less power than conventional RAMs.
Graphics Processing Unit
Apart from the monitor, the Graphics Processing Unit draws the maximum amount of energy. Nowadays energy efficient GPU uses a shared terminal instead of a video card. Some of the GPUs use motherboard video output which consumes less power.
