Robert Stevenson, a director of movies, documentaries and TV programmes, was born on Buxton in the year 1905. He moved to California in the 1940s and went on to direct 19 movies for the Walt Disney Company during the 1960s and the 1970s. One of the high points in his career was his direction of Julie Andrews in the musical Mary Poppins in the year 1964, which won him an Academy Award for Best Director. For his direction of Mary Poppins, Stevenson was also nominated for a DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures. Other projects that he directed include the movie King Solomon's Mines in the year 1937 and the TV series Alfred Hitchcock Presents in the years 1955 to 1959. He also directed two movies about a Volkswagen Beetle car. These were The Love Bug in 1968, and the sequel to the Love Bug, Herbie Rides Again, in the year 1974.
Elizabeth Spriggs, an actress of the stage, TV and movies, was born in Buxton in the year 1929. An actress of great versatility, she played Shakespearian roles on the stage, appeared in TV productions including Shine on Harvey Moon from the year 1982 to 1985 in which she played the character of Nan. He started his radio broadcasting career with Radio Caroline which was an offshore 'pirate' radio station. Radio Caroline was founded to get round the monopoly that radio stations had on the way that popular music was broadcast in the nineteen sixties. Radio Caroline was not licensed by any government, so that is why it was referred to as a pirate radio station. A movie was made about Radio Caroline, called The boat That Rocked, and released in the year 2009. In the movie, Dave Lee Travis is represented as DJ 'Doctor' Dave, played by the actor Nick Frost. After leaving Radio Caroline, Dave Lee Travis went on to forge a highly successful career as a Radio 1 DJ with the BBC.
Lloyd Cole, the lead singer and songwriter for the 1980s pop group Lloyd Cole and The Commotions, was born in Buxton in the year 1961. The band had many hit records, including Perfect Skin which reached number 26 in the UK singles chart in the year 1984. The Buxton Advertiser newspaper helped Lloyd Cole get in touch with his brother who he had not seen for many years.
