Putting new vinyl windows into a house is one way to give it a facelift. They are easy to see through and add a touch of elegance to both the interior and exterior. On the interior, window treatments can be used to enhance the room, coordinating the furniture and making it more stylish. There are several different types of coverings and features that cam be used, depending on how casual or formal the room is. In most cases, window treatments are used more for privacy than decoration. When possible, the replacement vinyl windows should be left uncovered or accented with the bare essentials so that the homeowner can enjoy them and the outside view they frame.
Curtains
Curtains should start at the top of the window frame and hang to the windowsill or extend just below it. A light or woven fabric should be used to allow the sunlight into the room. It is preferable to use at least two curtain panels so that they can be drawn open in the center during the day to brighten the room and expose the view, as well as the vinyl windows. The colors should coordinate with the room color or the furniture. As a rule of thumb for color and pattern choices, the curtains should pull the room together, not steal the show.
Draperies
For a more elegant look, draperies can be used instead of curtains. They extend to the floor and can be kept open with tiebacks to frame the window or drawn closed as needed for privacy. Motorized or manual pulleys make it easier to open and close draperies at will. Finials can adorn the tops of the window frames for a more elaborate touch.
Shades
For those concerned more with privacy than view or sunlight, shades are the most popular window dressing. Made of fabric or vinyl, they can be pulled up and down as needed. Roman shades typically roll up and down. Blinds are extended up and down on a pulley and can be opened or closed for privacy as needed.
Valances and Jabots
When privacy is not an issue, the replacement windows are exposed for their natural beauty. Hang a valance or jabot at the top for a splash of color and style. A woven or lighter fabric usually suggests a less formal tone, while heavier material dresses up a room.
Bare Essentials
Bay windows, casements and sliding glass doors are often left exposed without window treatments or with the barest of essentials for accents. This is when the design of the new replacement windows is highlighted the most and the homeowner can enjoy their new purchase without distraction.
