Having a small kitchen should not limit your options when it comes to design. While it is true that there is only so much you can do if you have a small space, you can still move freely inside your kitchen by using unique storage solutions and proper lighting and choosing appropriately sized appliances. Your goal when it comes to small kitchen design is minimum clutter and maximum efficiency. You should have a space for your kitchen essentials. If you cannot install new cabinets, you can use the space from an adjoining closet or even a few feet from the next room. Keep the items that are normally placed on your countertop to increase space. Go through all your kitchen utensils and appliances and get rid of those that you hardly ever use. Another way to maximize space is to install the island on casters or have a peninsula with hinged drop-down sections. For your cabinets, run them all the way up to the ceiling so you will have more area to store your kitchen essentials.
Another factor that affects the look of your kitchen is lighting. Make the room brighter by installing large windows. To make your kitchen larger and brighter, opt for more light. Use horizontal lines for your kitchen cabinets to create an illusion of length. Use light colors when painting your walls, or you can also use a monochromatic color scheme for an illusion of apparent space. For your cupboard doors, use opaque materials such as frosted glass inserts to make your kitchen look lighter and larger.
It surely requires creativity when you are designing small kitchen space. Drawers are more preferred by most homeowners with small kitchens instead of doors. This allows you to have an extra 30% space for your storage. Downsizing the kitchen sink also allow for more counter space. Opt for appliances that are smaller in size and have multi-purpose functions. Today, you can easily find appliances for small kitchens, such as refrigerators that are less deep (24-inch deep instead of 30-inch) or microwaves and other appliances that can be placed hanging underneath the cabinets. Having a small kitchen does not mean sacrificing storage and design. The goal, when it comes to kitchen design, is to make your space efficient for everyone in the family, whether it will be used for cooking, eating, or simply hanging out. Hopefully, the tips mentioned above will help you in maximizing your small space for your needs. As a last piece of advice, asking the help of professionals will make kitchen design easier for you.
