Croxton Kerrial is a small village of just 490 people located in the Vale of Belvoir in the county of Leicester in the English East Midlands. Many of the local people pronounce the name 'Croxton' as 'Crowsun', while the 'Kerrial' part of the name contains no spoken variation and is pronounced as written.
The village primary school is called Croxton Kerrial Primary School, and is located on School Lane. It caters for around seventy boys and girls aged four to eleven years old. The school is held in high regard within the local community, and has gained a number of awards. The school has also received good assessments from OFSTED, the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills, which is a UK Government Department with responsibility for standards in schools.
Croxton Kerrial Primary School has achieved the Activemark Award for pupil participation in exercise and sport through the National School Sport Survey. The Healthy Schools Award was achieved by Croxton Kerrial Primary School for its high standards of school food, sports and exercise, along with education in health related topics. The Heartstart Award has been granted to Croxton Kerrial Primary School in recognition of the way that the school has fostered awareness of how to deal with people who have suffered heart attacks. Teachers at Croxton Kerrial Primary School have trained pupils at the school in how to provide emergency life support, using DVDs, workbooks and mannequins to practice on.
Two male teachers from the school took part in a successful event in aid of Afrikids, a charity that seeks to help children in Africa. The teachers participated in a trek and climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in the African country Tanzania. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, and the achievement of the teachers reflects well on the school in the local community as well as providing great inspiration to the children who attend the school.
There is variety of clubs at Croxton Kerrial Primary School at which pupils can gain skills or just play and have fun. In the field of dance, there are clubs for Latin dancing, ballroom dancing, street dancing and cheerleading. Children with an interest in playing musical instruments can participate in the clubs for the recorder, the guitar, along with brass and woodwind instruments.
Croxton Kerrial Primary School dates from Victorian times when two Acts of Parliament were passed which granted a school to the village. The first Act of Parliament in relation to this matter was passed in the Year 1842, and the second Act of Parliament concerning the creation of a school for the village followed in the year 1845.
Following these Parliamentary go-aheads, the school was built in the year 1845 at a cost of £330 in the money of the time. Croxton Kerrial Primary School was provided with what they called a 'yard' which is what we would call the 'playground' in modern parlance. The building has been refurbished over the years, particularly the inside, but externally still retains the original expertly laid brickwork and other architectural features.
