The village of Edwalton lies to the south of Nottingham in England. The village has a number of clubs and societies to cater for the different leisure time activities that people may like to get involved with. The Edwalton Drama Group caters for local people who enjoy getting involved in amateur dramatic productions.
The members of Edwalton Drama Group are a varied bunch of local people from a wide variety of backgrounds, who all share a passion for the stage. The uninitiated may think that to take part in amateur dramatics you have to be someone with a theatrical demeanor and a wish to be under the lights and facing the audience. But this is not the case, as there are many things that people can do in an amateur dramatics society. People do not have to be leading men or women, they can have a small part on stage, or they can operate back stage, they can help with costumes, sound, lighting, selling tickets, or marketing. They may indeed direct the whole performance. So in common with other drama groups, Edwalton Drama Group has opportunities for many different roles that people can take on.
For those with plenty of time to devote to the role, there are opportunities at Edwalton Drama Group to play the leading man or woman. Such primary roles are very demanding and not everyone will be suited to the particular part. Particular plays or musicals will need certain types of people to play the various parts, particularly the main roles. Auditions for these roles can be competitive and sometimes people who are not cast for a role that they want are disappointed. However there are always other roles to play on stage, and the other roles will be less demanding and therefore easier and more fun to perform. In addition, the public and the rest of the drama club will be less judgmental about the smaller, less crucial performances.
Each Christmas, Edwalton Drama Group stages a pantomime like Cinderella, Rumplestiltskin, Aladdin or Jack And The Beanstalk. These productions are popular with family audiences, and bringing the children along to a pantomime is often a 'must do' activity for families over the Christmas season.
Edwalton Drama Group also stages one or two plays a year. The plays cover a wide array of different styles of on stage entertainment. They may be light-hearted comedy romps involving much laughter and larking around. These comedies are frequently put on by the Edwalton Drama Group, which has gained much praise from the local people for staging productions of this type.
They may be serious productions on the topic of murder and intrigue. They may be musicals that are bursting with songs and dancing. People can therefore put themselves forward for productions and roles that suit their own looks and personality. Monday evenings at Edwalton Church Hall is when people can pop along and meet the members of the club to discuss the idea of getting involved in a future production.
