Located on the Gulf of Antalya on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, Alanya has always been one of the most popular seaside resorts. The modern, sun seeking traveller arrives in Alanya for the same reasons as the Seljuk Turks all those centuries ago, the sea is warm and gentle, the beaches stretch for miles and the city has an interesting history. The southern part of town is the most tourist-oriented, but fortunately a height restriction has limited distribution common resort towns, and there are the usual collection of resort-style hotels and tourist-oriented fare in Alanya. The port is a hub of activity, especially at night, and when tired of relaxing on the beach, there are several sites such Damlatas Caves, Alanya Castle and Red Tower to visit. Alanya is also surrounded by the pine forest of the Taurus Mountains, it is highly recommended to take the half hour drive outside of the main town to enjoy the spectacular sights of this area.
There are plenty of fascinating sights to explore during your escape to Alanya, including exploring the medieval Castle and the ruins of a Seljuk village, the red tower, and nearby Damlatas Caves. A favourite is the Dim Dim Cave and Valley. Other than sunbathing and swimming well, there is also a water park, golf, mountain biking, bungee jumping, Alara river rafting, and excellent diving on offer. You can also boat trips to nearby caves to explore.
Alanya has a varied selection of restaurants, catering to a wide range of tastes, from traditional Turkish food to fast food McDonalds. Some favourites include memos, serving traditional Turkish dishes including a delicious stew Ottoman, and Big Ben for more English-style breakfasts and Sunday roasts. Try a kebab or Meze platter followed by a cold Efes beer to an authentic Turkish experience. If you eat from street vendors, remember that you can bargain the price of the meal, just remember that haggling is frowned upon in restaurants and grocery stores.
Alanya has a range of excellent shops, and some of the fun is to hone your skills haggling. Barring food, are negotiations about everything expected and patience is the key, you can usually expect to get the prices marked down by 30 to 50 percent. Ticket Sharks can get annoying, and it is best to avoid shops with aggressive selling. Alanya offers some excellent jewellery shops, as well as leather goods and clothing store, a local market, and the usual tourist novelty gifts.
