The Maya is a civilization that is known for its advanced level of mathematics, astronomy, language and art. The Maya are perhaps most recognized for having a fully developed calendar. They were able to accurately calculate lunar cycles, and predict eclipses. The Maya believed that time has a cyclical nature, and their ceremonies were related to celestial and terrestrial cycles.
The Maya developed two different calendars for these two cycles. The Maya priest would give meaning to the future or the past through his interpretation of these cycles and their relationship to the Mayan calendars. These calendars are more exact than the ones we use today. Since the calendar does not extend beyond 2012, many people believe that this could signify the end of the world; or at least the end of the world as we know it.
Touring the Mayan ruins has a lot to offer in cultural, archaeological and spiritual terms. Many ancient Maya cities are very well preserved today. These cities consist of a city center with main temples, plazas and ceremonial structures. When visiting these Mayan sites you will have the opportunity to experience the energy and wisdom of the ancient Mayas.
The Maya believed that the cosmos was made up of the Earth, the underworld below the earth, and the heavens in the sky. A separate deity was thought to rule each of these planes. The Maya believed that the night sky was the window to the supernatural, and where all possible worlds could intersect. Each god was thought to be an explanation of what the Maya observed by combining numbers from multiple calendars
The ancient Maya were a very mysterious civilization that constructed some of most amazing wonders in the world. Some of the highlights of the region include the great steal covered in hieroglyphic inscriptions, large pyramids and temples, artwork and artifacts left behind and athletic ball courts.
When you visit these places you will not only be visiting the ruins of a long lost empire, because the Maya people are still living there today. The descents of the ancient civilization will be your guides and the people with whom you interact. There are around two million Mayas still living today in their ancestral land.
There are also Maya Shamans who have kept alive the traditions of their ancestors. You can take a special guided spiritual tour where you will interact with Maya spiritualists and shamans. As you participate in ancient ceremonies and rituals you will have a very intimate experience of the inner sanctums of the modern day mysteries of the Maya.
When you take a tour of the ancient Maya sites, you learn about the fascinating ancient Maya civilization, the culture that has many people believing the world will end in 2012. A tour of the ancient Maya sites is an amazing experience that could change your life forever!
