There are more than a few ways to stay warm without letting your energy bill soar to monstrous proportions. Many of which are simply a matter of using materials and resources that you already have in a more efficient manner and even adding a few foods to your diet! Follow this simple guidance and you could be seeing a lower electricity bill land on your door soon.
More Efficient
Make better use of the appliances that you already have installed such as ceiling fans. Turn the heat down and leave the ceiling fan on its lowest setting to better circulate rising hot air. A small portable fan can work in the same way, only it is better placed near areas where heat congregates such as near your refrigerator or kitchen stove when cooking. If you have radiant heat, or older heating fixtures installed, proper placement of a fan can make all of the difference.
Also, the addition of heat holding elements added to the air help heat work more efficiently. A humidifier is an inexpensive way to accomplish this and can be picked up at the drug store. Or even better yet, use a homemade version that is as simple as simmering a pot of water on the stove top.
Solar Energy
Making the most out of the solar energy your home is exposed to everyday, is another good way to keep a house cosy during the winter. Use heavier curtains and rugs on the sunnier side of your home that will capture heat then release it into the house throughout the day. Drapes with reflective surfaces are also effective at redirecting heat and energy back into the room. Every little bit helps.
Food
Eating more foods such as whole wheat, buckwheat, barley and oats can work to heat you up from the inside out. Macrobiotics raise the body temperature considerably as they are digested and the process goes on for hours with lasting body warmth. And while using the stove top to flip up a heap of buckwheat pancakes, or the oven to bake up a batch of home-made, wheat and barley muffins or biscuits, you are using your own energy more efficiently, while adding to the heat of your home.
With just a few, mindful acts that reduce waste by creating a more efficient energy element in your living space, and even your diet, you can make for a cosier winter, without soaring energy bills.
