Any homeowner thinking of remodeling or installing a new bathroom will be faced with the dilemma of which type of tile to use. Both a beautiful and practical choice for any bathroom would be slate tiles. The use of slate in bathrooms has grown in popularity for a numbers of reasons but first and foremost is the practicality that comes with installing slate tiles.
They are durable and slip resistant, making them a natural choice for the bathroom but they are also a natural stone that comes in many colors. Because slate is a natural stone and not mass produced, each one is unique and different from the other adding character to any bathroom into which they are installed. Have multiple bathrooms? Choose a gray colored tile for one bathroom and brown tiles for another, the possibilities are endless! Installation of slate tiles is not as difficult as it seems either, anybody that is even slightly talented in home repairs can surely tackle the project on their own.
Be sure to do some research on installation as it is not the same as ceramic tile installation. The selection of the proper tile will also vary based on where in the bathroom it will be placed, tiles in the shower should not be the same tile used in bathrooms that are only two fixtures. Grout selection will also differ in the same way. An underlay for the tiles should also be present to protect the sub floor. Unsure of self installation? Be sure to call in a professional in order to have the job done properly, insuring it will last for years to come. Some points to remember though is that slate tiles tend to show fine cracks over time, but this can also add character to the stone in your bathroom.
They also must be sealed properly as they are a porous tile and will absorb water from bathroom use and can cause fading over time. The choice of using slate tiles is an excellent one and one that you and your family will enjoy and your guests will marvel at their beauty and your taste. Your household bathrooms will seem more like sanctuaries and a mini vacation inside the privacy of your own home. Thinking of selling someday or even refinancing then don't forget the value their installation will add to your home, the rate of return on remodeling bathrooms can be as much as 150%, making it will worth the initial investment.
