What is HVAC?
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, or in common terms HVAC refers to all the systems and network that are used for providing filtered air, heating, and cooling, and for managing humidity levels in a building. These systems are designed based on requirements and can vary in their complexity. However, an important aspect of HVAC design is the conservation of energy.
Opportunities for Energy Conservation
Opportunities and methods for energy conservation in HVAC systems would depend on their design, operating standards, modes of operation, maintenance and monitoring practices, and of course the efficiency of the operator. Some of the ways in which energy efficient systems can be established are discussed here.
-
Eliminate usage in unoccupied spaces or set controls to reduce usage in such spaces.
-
Save energy by reducing usage hours. Installing night set-back controls, shutting off when not required, adjusting thermostat as per climatic changes, and installing separate controls for different zones are some ways in which you can conserve energy.
-
Adjust zones that are too hot or too cold by using window blinds or shades, using light-colored roofs to reflect heat, growing trees to ensure natural shade and cooling, and adjusting air duct registers.
-
Minimize exhaust and make-up air by sealing and insulating air ducts, walls, and ceilings, keeping doors closed, preventing leaks, reducing air volume loss, and installing thermal windows to reduce loss of cooling and heating.
-
Establish a regular maintenance plan that includes checking for leaks, cleaning coil surfaces and fans, tuning the system, cleaning or replacing air filters, repairing leaks, and turning off hot water pumps when not required.
-
Implement energy management systems to adjust and optimize operations based on changing requirements, environmental changes, etc.
-
Install or upgrade to energy efficient equipment. Most states specify minimum requirements for high-energy consumption devices. It is always advisable to purchase equipments or devices that have higher standards of energy conservation than specified by these regulations.
By following standard procedures and implementing efficient systems, you can ensure that the HVAC system designed and implemented in your building is energy efficient.
