When Should I Hire a Home Improvement Contractor?

Oh, those home improvement shows sometimes make it look so easy. They say that you can do this project or that and save yourself a great deal of money. But, what they do not tell you is they have a crew helping behind the scenes. It might take them a day or two. Doing it yourself without a crew behind the scenes could take a week or a month more than you anticipated.
How can you tell when you need to opt for a home improvement contractor versus when you can do it yourself?
The first thing to consider is your home improvement skills. If you have never picked up a hammer, you should not expect an easy time of renovating your bathroom. That might be a good time to bring in a contractor. But, if you want to change a faucet, you might be able to pull it off with a how-to tutorial from the internet.
Another thing to consider is if you need to pull permits for the project you have in mind. A kitchen or bathroom renovation may require pulling permits and calling in inspectors. When you start dealing with this situation, you might want to consider hiring a contractor. The contractor knows the regulations and requirements for different sorts of projects. The contractor speaks the same language as the inspectors and permitting agencies. Let them handle those projects.
Another time to bring in a contractor is when you are dealing with the structure of your home. Putting on a new roof can be a do-it-yourself project. But putting on a new roof gable may not be so easy. If you need to change the roof, foundation or supporting walls of your home, bring in a contractor. The contractor has all the safety equipment necessary to do the job without risking life and limb.
You may decide you want to tackle a particular project yourself. You start demoing walls and taking down the ceiling. Then you may find yourself in a difficult situation because of unforeseen problems. That is the time when you need to bring in a contractor. Trying to push your way forward without the right knowledge could end up compromising the integrity of your home. And that is the last thing you want to do.
Use your head on any home improvement project. If you find yourself treading in waters you do not understand, then consider hiring a contractor for at least part of the work. Your home and family will thank you in the end.
