There can often be a host of reasons why a city may require a new bridge. If someone were to ask 12 different people, they would get a dozen different answers. Asking these questions, is part of an important and vital process required to determine the viability, benefits and practicality of such an undertaking.
Building bridges is a metaphor quite often used to mean bringing people together. The purpose and function of such a project, when completed, does just that. The citizens who reside in, and travel frequently in the area, can tell you how something considered as commonplace as a bridge is anything but that.
There is often a process which involves discourse, discussion and opinions to be aired, often publicly. Many different issues can be brought to the light of day through these informal type hearings. Most often there will be a review of current and future demographics, which either support the need of such a project or not.
Once a consensus is reached, amongst the different parties as to the necessity of such an undertaking, then a more serious consideration and evaluation can begin. Conducting a public form, allows for any citizen or local official who may have a concern to voice it. Open discourse often is the one mechanism that can bring to light many considerations not yet addressed.
There is often a structured process employed by municipal entities, local and or state agencies. It is common for a reputable consultant, skilled and knowledgeable in such matters, to provide a thorough and comprehensive analysis. The conclusions reached are quite often very credible; however, certain issues are non-quantifiable. These intangibles may involve how changes regarding the vibrancy and flavor of a given neighborhood may be affected.
The many benefits of investing in infrastructure are well-known. When such an important issue like a bridge is being debated, the public wishes to assure itself that its dollars are being well spent. In order to help determine this, proactive citizens should be encouraged to participate, ask questions and receive answers accordingly.
In this age of growing environmental awareness, it is more important than ever to determine how such a project may affect the citizen’s right to free enjoyment of riverine, or watershed areas. Will such a project directly affect tourism and sporting endeavors, will a greater number of travelers be routed through an area, knowing the answers to these questions allows the citizenry to be proactive and truly involved in the development of their community.
