Ripley is a town in the Amber Valley area of Derbyshire in England. The town of Ripley has a number of notable people associated with it.
The inventor of the Bouncing Bomb, the geodesic airframe and the earthquake bomb, Barnes Wallis was born in Ripley in the year 1887 and he lived in the town for a number of years. Barnes Wallis was a highly talented inventor, with scientific skills and the practical know-how of an engineer. Barnes Wallis devised the concept of a Bouncing Bomb that could be used to destroy dams during the Second World War. In the year 1943 the Royal Air Force used the Bouncing Bomb to attack a number of dams in the Ruhr Valley. This flooded factories and damaged hydro-electric power supplies, which helped to significantly slow down the Nazi's war effort. The house in Ripley where Barnes Wallis was born has a blue plaque to commemorate his birth place. There is also a park in Ripley that has been named after Barnes Wallis. A public house in the town of Ripley has also been named after him. The Sir Barnes Wallis public house stands as a tribute to the great son of Ripley who helped win the Second World War.
Andy Sneap is a musician, songwriter and music producer who was born in the town of Ripley in the year 1969. The musical genre that Andy Sneap specializes in is Heavy Metal, a loud and heavy form of rock music which originated in the late nineteen sixties, and was pioneered by groups like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Andy Sneap plays in a thrash metal band called Sabbat, and has produced music for Megadeth, which is one of the leading Thrash Metal bands. Thrash Metal is a variety of Heavy Metal music that is characterized by having a quicker tempo and a more aggressive delivery than normal Heavy Metal music. Andy Sneap created a music production company called Backstage Productions in 1994 which is based in a converted farmhouse the town of Ripley.
