Studying abroad is an exciting and wonderful opportunity for students at any point in their education. That's the good news. The bad news is that studying abroad can also be quite expensive. Luckily, for those who can't afford to pay out of pocket, many study abroad scholarships are available.
There are many places you can search to find a variety of scholarships for study abroad programs. The Internet, school websites, and word of mouth are always valuable resources. However, there may also be resources you might not have even considered.
Obtaining a study abroad scholarship might not be a piece of cake, but it isn't that hard either. To begin looking and increasing your chances, start with the following:
Your College: The college you are presently attending is a great place to research study abroad scholarships. Your school should have an office or department dedicated to university study abroad programs. These departments are staffed with highly knowledgeable people who may either know of many scholarships, or at least tell you where to look. You may also visit this department to inquire if your financial aid transfers abroad. If your school does not have this type of department, contact the main administration offices for help.
Grants: Grants are often an untapped resource for college students - many people hear about them, but few people apply for them. There are many grants available in the form of scholarships for study abroad programs. Inquiring at your school or with your state is a good place to start.
Private Scholarships: You don't have to be at the top of your class or a stellar athlete to obtain a scholarship. In fact, there are a plethora of scholarships awarded for several reasons other than grades. Private societies award scholarships for some of the most random reasons. Sometimes you can even get one based on your heritage, or for being a first generation college attendee. Sometimes you can even get one for being tall.
The Overseas University: Many university study abroad programs offer scholarships as part of their plan. If your going overseas is contingent on a scholarship, then make sure you only apply to universities who actively give out financial assistance. You can call the overseas schools you are considering and ask to speak with the study abroad program director. They should be able to point you in the right direction. If they don't provide scholarships, ask them about schools in their area that do.
Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity, one that is not merely limited to those who can afford it. If traveling and studying abroad is a dream of yours, work hard on obtaining a scholarship. The more you find and the more you apply, the better your chances of receiving financial help.
