The opportunity to enroll in a university study abroad program is an exciting one. Chances are, you find yourself filled with the desire to visit overseas. Of course, you might find yourself overwhelmed as well. You wonder when you should go, what you should study, maybe even what shoes you should pack.

Before you get ahead of yourself, remember that joining study abroad programs begins with taking two major steps: choosing a program and applying for scholarships.

The step of choosing your university study abroad program is a vital one. To make this choice, there are obvious things to consider. You, for instance, will likely want to go to a country you are interested in seeing, with a university that includes your major, minor, or others areas of you like to study.

Yet, there may be some subtle things that also influence which study abroad programs you join. Perhaps the country's cost of living is a factor or maybe you only want to visit a country known for its safety. Perhaps you are interested in the recreation of a certain area or maybe you have family in a nearby country. Some students even take the weather into account when making their decision. These issues are easily researched online to help you make your choices in a well informed manner.

In regards to the university study abroad program itself, you may want to join one with a strong support system. This can help you assimilate to life abroad while helping prepare you on what to expect. Lastly, a major factor when choosing a program is whether or not a study abroad scholarship is available.

You may only be able to go overseas if you are awarded a study abroad scholarship. For this reason, it is a good idea to see which schools offer or accept scholarships before narrowing down your decision.

The study abroad program department at your present college should offer a wealth of information regarding scholarships, grants, and financial aide. The Internet is also filled with all sorts of scholarship offers for a variety of overseas destinations. Finally, if you find a school abroad you are interested in attending, don't be afraid to call them directly and inquire about scholarships. You never know what they might say.

Studying overseas will bring you a wealth of experience and adventure. But, before you take too many steps in that direction, don't forget the most important ones: decide where you're going and figure out how to afford the program.
