Once you have amassed hundreds of dolls in your collection, one challenge that you might get is how to store them and keep it at its pristine condition. Space may also be another challenge that most collectors encounter as their collection expand. Thus, a display cabinet may not even be enough for a serious collector and sometimes these dolls get store in boxes. Some would even be satisfied to just rotate the collection in display until they lose track of its order.
The most essential key to establishing a doll collection storage or showcase is to organize the dolls according to its age. The reason for this is that older dolls have to be stored carefully due to its more sensitive nature. Nevertheless, most of these vintage dolls are rare and of high value and could even be a family heirloom that you need to preserve for the next generation. These are best enclosed in a tight showcase, curio cabinets, or box to avoid dust, moisture, and insects to ruin the item. Make sure that the display cabinet or storage box is located in the interior part of your home which is not in direct sunlight. Keep and maintain it in a dry cool place as much as possible.
When dolls are stored in boxes or containers, make sure that you wrap the dolls in unbleached cloth or cottons without prints. Some collectors would love to see their dolls in the original packaging, however this may also even attribute to the degradation of the dolls. Some of these boxes have an acidic composition that could cause discoloring to the dolls. Thus, you may wrap it in plain natural cloth or acid-free plain white soft paper.
Next is to account for the items in your collection. It is always to arrange them in chronological order and according to the type of collection. In the case of a Barbie doll collection, you may organize them according to the series that the doll belongs like the Barbie Ponytail Collection or say the Barbie-Disney collection perhaps. Always keep a list so that you can easily locate the dolls later on and do an inventory of the collection annually.
For those who really have a huge collection who cannot even house their dolls in their own home, it would be better to keep them in a climate-controlled storage facility. If this is your only viable option, make sure you choose a facility that is well-secured and that the storage area doesn’t have any holes and other entrances for vermin and insects. Of course, this will cost you money so keep in mind to keep dolls that are really of important value as you may just end up hoarding unnecessary items.
If you would like to get started in collecting dolls, or introduce a loved one to the tradition of doll collecting it might be a good idea to start with dolls that interest them and are of relatively low cost. Our Generation Dolls are great for younger girls while Monster High Dolls might be better aimed at pre-teen and teenage young ladies.
