The Algarve is divided up into 16 municipalities, many of which will be familiar names to those who have enjoyed holidays in the Algarve in the past. The capital of the region is Faro, which as well as being the location of the airport, is also an attractive, historical city that has had millennia of human habitation from as far back as the Palaeolithic era, and boasts several sites of historical interest. The modern human habitation of the Algarve's numerous towns and resorts includes of lots of visiting families, couples and groups enjoying an Algarve holiday. Some of popular resort areas including Albufeira and Lagos are also among the municipalities of the region.

For the greatest combination of beaches, water sports, bars, restaurants and nightlife, many visitors head to bustling Albufeira. This popular resort town boasts a huge variety of entertainment options for both the hot sunny days and the warm summer evenings. Many younger groups visit Albufeira for its lively bar and nightclub scene, but there is just as much on offer for couples and families, with accommodation spread across locations to suit your preferred bedtime. A somewhat quieter resort nearby is Vilamoura, which as well as attracting families and couples, is also very popular for its local golf courses and attractive marina area.

Further west, the purpose built resort of Praia da Rocha has a stunning stretch of golden sand, from which visitors can try their hand at a wide choice of water sports or simply stretch out on the beach and soak up the sun. Another purpose built resort in the Algarve is the very exclusive Val do Lobo, which has an extensive range of sporting facilities, including a health and fitness club, tennis courts and even a riding school. Val do Lobo is especially popular for golfing holidays, with two 18-hole courses presenting a few challenging holes for even the best players.
