Sitting for long periods of time is bad for leg circulation. Truckers, in particular, can develop circulation problems because they are on the road for long stretches without movement or exercise. They drive daily for up to 11 hours at a time. Many do not take the time to stop and stretch their legs or walk about. Wearing compression socks helps to prevent blood from pooling in the legs while truckers are on the road. There are several different types of compression stockings for truckers that are available through online companies. They are also referred to as support socks.
Preferences
Support socks can be bought without a prescription. They are available in different blends of fabric, such as cotton, nylon blend or nylon. Depending on the manufacturer and preferences of the consumer, compression socks can be worn with different levels of graduated compression designed to help the circulation in the lower legs. There are many different color options available. The most common are black, white and various shades of beige.
Size
The right size and compression will product the most effective and comfortable fit. Lower compression stockings are determined by height, weight and/or shoe size. Compression socks with higher levels of compression are sized by measuring the leg in three places, around the ankle, calf and length from floor to bend of knee. For first-timers, it is important to seek medical advice before buying support socks above a compression level of 15-20mmHg.
Types
The stocking should cover the area of the leg where the trucker is experiencing discomfort. Support stockings are most commonly available in three different lengths. Knee-highs come up just below the knee. Special attention is paid so that they stay up, but don't make the upper calf area sore. Thigh highs are more popular with women. They typically have a silicone stay-up band and provide compression from the upper thigh down to the ankle. Support pantyhose are traditionally worn by women, but have recently grown in popularity among men. They offer improved circulation for the upper leg and thigh, something that knee-highs cannot do.
Ailments
Health conditions that plague truck drivers due to poor blood circulation in the legs include peripheral vascular disease (PVD), and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). These conditions are caused by poor circulation of blood from the feet and legs to the heart. Symptoms often begin with swollen feet, ankles and calves. The legs are often fatigued and the truck driver may experience occasional cramping below the knee. If left untreated, symptoms will graduate to tingling and leg pain in the feet and legs. Wearing support stockings will help to alleviate symptoms. As with all medical issues, a doctor’s advice should be considered before performing any self-treatment for discomfort or pain.
