If you own an Xbox 360 then you are probably familiar with the term red ring of death. You know when the lights on the front of your console go from green to red and your game finishes rather abruptly. This can be really annoying and cause you much frustration. It is preventable though and in many cases easy to fix. Here are the top three causes of the red ring of death so you are aware of what to look out for.
-
When the console cannot detect an audio video cable the red ring of death will be displayed. In this situation it is advisable to check all the connections both into your Xbox and into your TV. First off unplug all the connections and replace them. Ensure they are firmly plugged in and secure. Make certain that they are all connected in the correct socket. It is also worth checking the actual cable for signs of damage. For example a split cable or maybe a rodent could have fancied a snack. If none of these solutions can fix your problem try to borrow a friends A/V cable to determine if a new cable is needed. Doing this will help us to see if it is the cable or the console which has the fault.

There could be a general hardware failure with your console or power supply and this can cause the RROD. It is imperative that we find out which is causing the error do this by checking the light on the power brick, it should be green. If this is the case then unplug then reconnect the power supply. And ensure all the connections are firmly in place. However if the light on the power brick is red or off completely then try this. Disconnect the power from the console and the outlet and insert it back in, switch the console on and check the status of the lights. It is also a good idea to try this out at another outlet as this is sometimes caused by faulty wall sockets.

The main reason for a red ring of death error on your console is overheating. This can be caused by things such as poor ventilation around your console. This is easy to remedy though, take a look at where your console is positioned. A lot of people place their consoles on bookcases with little or no gaps next to the console and the hot air cannot escape freely from the vents. If your console is in a ventilated area it is advisable to switch it off for about an hour to let it cool down before trying to turn it on again. Also check the vents for a build up of dust and clean this if necessary.
