What are some of the funnest things to see and do in San Francisco? There are all sorts of things to see there. In San Francisco you will find no end to the parks, Museums and tours offered all close to the city. One of the most popular sites is the Golden Gate Park and Golden Gate Bridge. When the Golden Gate Bridge was finished in 1937, it was a record maker as the world's longest suspension bridge. It has since been superseded by eight other bridges but is still an iconic symbol of California and the USA. The most prominent feature in the city of San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge, which has thousands and thousands of visitors every year who are fascinated by the views and by the nearby prison, Alcatraz.
On a nice day a great way to spend time is by walking to the Golden Gate, which only takes a little over an hour if you start your journey from the city. Another very popular activity is to ride a bicycle along one of the many bike paths, which is generally cheaper than driving, and the hassle of traffic is lost.
Ride the Cable Car
Since the late 1800's, cable cars have been used in the city and have also become a familiar and popular mode of getting to where you need to go. The cable cars draw many tourists and vacationers, but it is still definitely worth a ride as you get to see what the city is like. Something interesting is when the seats of the car are all taken, you are allowed to hang off of the sides, but take caution of other cable cars approaching from a different track. The cable cars run from Union Square, one of the more popular shopping areas, fisherman's wharf, and California Street. For the price of $3 for a single ride, or a $9 day pass, the cable cars are a relatively inexpensive and fun way to see San Francisco.
Alcatraz Tour
One place you will not want to miss out on is Alcatraz. By a ferry, you are taken to the island where the famous prison floats. In total, the Alcatraz tour is approximately 2 hours including the ride to and from the island. Part of the tour is a 45 minute audio guided tour which takes you to destinations like the cells, the hospital, the kitchen, and other rooms located in the prison. Also available is an Alcatraz night tour, which offers a few extra sights and presentations. The night tour tells the exciting stories of escape, riots and other daily occurrences in the well-known prison. Make a point of reserving in advance as the city does attract many tourists, which means you aren't always guaranteed a visit to the places you want to see.
Fisherman's Wharf
Fisherman's Wharf is a fun themed pier that is filled with restaurants and all kinds of shops. No matter what time of year it is, there seems to be an exciting event going on at the wharf whether it be seasonal or just because! Most of the tours that are available depart from the piers, for instance the infamous boat ride to Alcatraz. There are many shops to buy a large variety of gifts and souvenirs from, but if you are interested in shopping, then Union Square is the place to be.
Muir Woods
Not far from San Francisco, in the Muir Woods National Park, are the famous Giant Redwoods. If you don't have your own vehicle, the option to set up a visit is available in the city. There are pamphlets and information leaflets in most all of the hotels, which give detailed information about specific tours and sightseeing activities. Once in the Redwood Park, you will be in awe by the majesty of the gigantic trees, and will have an enjoyable time walking on one of the trails which vary in distance. Depending on how much walking you are looking to do, plan on it taking around 45 minutes to get there from San Francisco.
