Located near the Walker County and Floyd County Georgia, the Pocket Trails provides campers and picnickers one of the best nature trail in the state. It is an easy 2.7 mile loop trail with 1,500 feet of elevation that is marked by white blazes wherein the first half mile of the Pocket trail conjoins with the footpath of Pocket Nature Trail. The name was derived from a geological formation that looks like a horseshoe at the Mill and Horn Mountains. It is created by the steep ridges of the Horn Mountain on the three sides of the mountain thereby forming a low pocket. This pocket formation can be seen at the curve towards the Pocket Trail recreation area.
For campers, the campground is not available from November 1 to April 1 but hiking activities can still be done the whole year round. You can start the trail counterclockwise from the Pocket Picnic Area and then looping to the camping ground. From the trailhead, a map and informative board can be found which provides a descriptive overview of the whole trail.
The pathway runs along the hill's inner portion of the ridge. Cross the three bridges along the way until the path makes an ascent where you will notice a man-made wall. Move past this as the tread way swerves to the north side of the ridges.
At this point the ridges are damper where moss thrives on the rocks. The pathway continues to make a descent until it goes back to a level ground until the end of the trail. Once you have reached the loop's end there are trail markers that will lead you to turn left to the camping service road. Proceed to take the path that leads you to the picnic area by crossing the bridges.
The Pocket Trail is a well forested area and can usually be crowded during weekends but is closed at night. The place is noticeably hot during summer as it is not too breezy here due to the pocket formation. To get here, start from Resaca and proceed to GA 136 east for 15 miles or if you start from Lafayette, take the west bound road for 12 miles.
Then turn south on for 7 miles on Pocket Road until you reach the Pocket recreation picnic area. The Pocket Recreation Area was also the site of the Civilian Conservation Corps camp from the year 1938 to 1942. There is even a cold clear spring in the middle of the picnic area which flows through as a refreshing part of the landscape.
No matter what outdoor activity an emergency can strike at any time. A reliable radio is simply a safety must. We carry a variety of uhf, vhf, marine and CB radios for sale. You can choose from the versatile Handheld CB Radio models all the way to the more powerful 10 Meter Radios
