As parents we do a lot of things to protect our children that we and they may not like. Using parental controls to filter your child's use of the Internet may seem as though it's on the edge of totalitarian control and rebel against the trust and respect you feel you need to show your child. Perhaps it's time to find a new way to look at doing these things for the sake of your own sanity. Parental controls are tools that are not intended to provide censorship from information flowing to your child that would be useful and relevant.
Instead, it's a way of making sure your child isn't unintentionally exposed to some of the more unsavory things the Internet provides easy access to in many homes around the world. It may seem foreign at first but it's true, using parental controls to filter your child's use of the Internet really is something you are doing for the good of your child more than anything else. Sometimes controlling the information leaving your home can be just as powerful as controlling the information that comes into your home.
Other web filters, the types of filters that give many parents pause but are also very useful to ensure that kids of all ages are not accessing information they shouldn't be when online, can be set to filter out specific words, phrases, and topics. Common favorites among parents are those that filter out adult websites, lottery websites, gambling websites, and even websites for movies and cartoons you don't want your family watching. Using parental controls to filter your child's use of the Internet is very powerful for making sure that your child isn't exposed to things he or she simply isn't ready to see, read, or comprehend.
There really is no reason for parents not to take the time to become familiar with various methods of using parental controls to filter your child's use of the Internet from the very beginning. This way, children don't bridle or rebel against newly imposed rules that may limit their ability to reach sites they are accustomed to accessing (like favorite cartoon or gaming sites). Whether you want to be perceived as the bad guy over Internet use or not, there are too many dangers lurking on the World Wide Web to let your children roam free and unprotected. Filters are an excellent way of adding back up protection for kids internet, or any of the small details you may have missed.
