Contrary to popular belief, snacking is healthy. It keeps your metabolism buzzing in between meals. When your metabolic rate is up, you keep on burning calories which results in faster weight loss. What is not healthy, however, are the kinds of snacks you eat. Generally, when you're off to work, it's easier to grab a bag of chips or go to the nearest fast food chain to order cheesy burgers, French fries and soda. But these are not the most nutritious food options either for your health or your waistline. Besides, these kinds of snacks do nothing to boost your energy levels-- something that you need while you're on the job.
The best snacks for work are those that are made up of complex carbohydrates that give you sustained energy all throughout your workday. They should also be small enough to keep in your drawer so you don't give your boss the impression that you're a pig. Besides, some workplaces have a no-eating at the desk policy so you need something that you can readily munch on while no one is looking.
Here are some of the best snacks you can bring to the office:
-
Dried fruits. Dried apricots, prunes and raisins are very dense in nutrition. They have high levels of Vitamin C, potassium, iron and calcium. Aside from these, they are also full of antioxidants that protect the body against aging and certain types of cancers. Plus, they are also rich in fiber that is essential to digestive and heart health. They can easily be placed in your bag or in your drawer and are not messy to eat at all. With dried fruits, you get the energy boost you need with just eight apricots, ten prunes or twenty raisins.
-
Almonds. Almonds are protein and fiber-rich foods that are full of healthy fats. They are also good sources of Vitamin E that keeps your skin healthy and eliminates free radicals from your body. Almonds also rate low in the glycemic index, making it one of the best snacks for keeping you alert and active all throughout your workday. Just 20 almonds is enough to satisfy your mid-morning or mid-afternoon hunger pangs while sustaining your energy levels.
-
Low fat yogurt. Yogurt is high in calcium and probiotics that keep your intestines healthy. Aside from choosing the low-fat or non-fat varieties, get unsweetened yogurt so you're certain that you're not getting additional calories from sugar. To sweeten the taste, add honey. Don't use artificial sweeteners that have been linked to the development of various diseases and certain types of cancers. Besides studies have shown that honey is good for your heart as it increases good cholesterol levels while decreasing bad cholesterol.
These treats don't need a lot of time to prepare. In fact, you can simply put them in your bag before heading to the office. Instead of making coffee every time you feel sleepy, nibble on pieces of fruits or munch on some almonds. Wash these down with water and you'll not only reap the benefit of a healthier body, you'll also be more efficient in work as well.
