If you are fortunate enough to have a large yard, you know that a push mower just won't cut it! That leaves you with a few different options: hire a professional lawn care service or start shopping for a riding mower. Most people opt to purchase a riding mower because it saves money in the long run. Riding mower models also give you more control over your lawn mowing schedule as well as the maintenance length.
There are many things to consider when shopping for a mower. First, you need to take into account the size of your lot. While the exact guidelines may vary based on the manufacturer and riding mower model, experts agree on a few general guidelines. For yards ½ to 1 acre in size, you should choose a model with at least a 14 horsepower engine and a 42 inch swath, or cutting width. If your yard is between 1 and 2 acres, the riding mower you are looking at should have between 14 and 16 horsepower engines and a cutting width of between 42 and 46 inches. Yards larger than two acres will require a riding mower with 18 to 24 horsepower engines and a 46 to 54 inch swath. A riding mower with wider swaths will require fewer passes to cut the lawn, resulting in faster and more efficient mowing.
Another thing to consider when shopping for riding mower models is the terrain of your yard. If you have a steep yard, you probably want rule out any riding mower models that do not have all-wheel drive. If you have a yard with lots of ornamental items such as bird baths, benches, flower gardens, trees and/or fences, the turning radius should be a large factor in your decision. A riding mower with tighter turning radiuses will be easier to maneuver and make lawn mowing around obstacles easier. Zero-turn models are fantastic in this regard. Most zero-turn riding mower models are operated using motion control levers rather than standard steering wheels, however, which some people find harder to control. If you are considering purchasing a zero-turn mower, you may want to try one out first.
Yet another thing to mull over when comparing riding mower models is the functionality. There are many different riding mower models available with many different features. In order to get the most for your money, you may want to consider purchasing a model that can serve multiple functions. For example, if you have a large front yard you probably have a long driveway as well and should consider a riding mower with front snow plow capabilities. If you have a wide-open space, purchasing a model with cruise control could be important. Other features that make riding mower models more functional include rear bag, rake and aerator attachments. You should take the time to think about exactly how you can use your new riding mower and choose according to your needs.
There are many things to take into account when shopping for riding mower models. As with any major purchase, you should do your research, weigh the importance or your own wants and needs and compare prices before making your final decision.
