Safety Tips for the Push Mower

When operating a push mower, to mow your lawn safely is very important because these machines can be extremely dangerous if proper safety guidelines are not followed. All of these machines come with warnings and rules to follow, so it's important to follow them and be careful.
A push mower has many moving parts and pieces and it's important to stay clear of all of them when the machine is turned on. It is very important to wear proper clothing and safety gear when operating a mower, so avoid loose fitting clothes, especially baggy pants. Baggy, loose clothing can easily get caught up in the motor and pull your body into the dangerous machine. Also, remember to wear eye protection, because when you mow your lawn with a push mower, it is likely that you'll run over a small rock or twig and the blades will throw the debris into the air at very fast speeds. Eye injuries are one of the most commonly reported problems people have when mowing their lawns. Proper shoe attire is also tremendously necessary for the safety of your feet when operating a push mower. Losing a toe to a push mower is the most common accident that can happen with any household machine in the United States and is usually caused by slipping on the fresh cut grass. Make sure you are wearing closed toe, sturdy footwear that can protect from the flying debris coming out of the push mower.
There are many sharp blades on the underside of a push mower, and they can be dangerous. They are designed to be able to cut through large sticks and roots, which could cause some potential damage to a person. Before you use your push mower, take a walk through your yard and make sure any large debris or toys are picked up. This will only take a minute or two and can help avoid push mower accidents from happening. Always keep all four wheels to the push mower on the ground, and never lift up the front of the mower to turn it around. Never let the blades of the push mower be exposed while the motor is running. If the push mower is lifted it can cause any stuck debris to get loose and launch it across the yard at someone, or back up in your face. Debris can break windows or damage other equipment. Try to always push the push mower forward, and avoid excessive backward motions. Moving backwards is harder to see where you are going and you could fall or slip, bringing the push mower with you. Look where you are going and always try to mow across an incline instead of up and down it if possible.
A push mower is a great option for those with smaller yards or complicated terrain. They are fun and easy to use, but if you're not careful, a push mower can be dangerous. Follow all precautions, be thorough, and you'll save yourself a trip or two to the emergency room.
