We asked an expert who agrees that the problems are growing, but it does not depend on the disks ...
- We often get this question when we are out and talk to people. Our view is that people feel more disk problems today. One reason is that we save about ten times more data today than three years ago. So we simply have more contact with hard drives today. Partly because there are more types of hard drives today and many are using the wrong type of disk ..
An example of the wrong disk usage would be to put short-term cheap SATA drives in high traffic servers with more expensive SCSI disks needed to satisfy the load over time.
He believes that many other factors also come into play. For example, the data currently stored closer to the disks, which increases the number of errors in absolute terms. But the ruling on the amount of stored data does not increase the errors.
Another factor is that over all the disks in larger systems now being used more intensively than they did before. Before SANs, virtualization and cloud broke through it was not unusual that disks were only used for 10-20 percent of its capacity. So in terms of how much benefit they do not increase errors.
- It is important to protect your pc against data loss, one way is to use the right disk for the right task. First, always test your backups. Today, it is natural to have backup. But everyday i ill meet people who skimped on to see if the backups are really working,
Another data recovery method to protect against physical defects from the factory is to mix disks from different shipments from the manufacturer.
It can also be said that there are only a few manufacturers of hard drives left. Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (TSG) sold its subsidiary to hard disk manufacturer Western Digital (WD) in early March. A price tag of 4.3 billion U.S. dollars indicates that Western Digital believes in a future of hard drives.
Hitachi in turn purchased the manufacturing of hard drives from IBM in 2003 for about two billion dollars. Hitachi managed to not make money on the hard drives.
WD had about 31 percent of the market, based on supplied disks. Seagate had 29 percent and Hitachi 18 percent. The remaining 22 percent divided equally by Toshiba / Fujitsu and Samsung.
Data are from Isuppli and Computer World and in the fourth quarter of 2010. Within each specific market segment, there is even fewer manufacturers.
Data recovery from our point of view, we can only say that we back up five times per day, Databases are backed up every night and saved one week back...
