Being dumped is the hardest thing for anyone. Whether your boyfriend or girlfriend did the dumping doesn't make the pain any less. You feel betrayed and like trash that's been thrown to the garbage bin, worthless. Who do you turn to? Unless your best friend was with you at the moment of truth, you'll most likely turn to your pillow for a good cry first. After that, you'll most likely drown all your troubles in a box of chocolates, a gallon of ice cream or a bag of nachos. These comfort foods provide you with just the soothing you need to go through the emotional pain that threatens to tear you at the guts. When you are at the lowest point in your life, you turn to these foods because they just sit silently, waiting for you to sink your teeth into them. Some say that they are even better than friends because they don't give unsolicited advice, are preferred more than parents because they don't scold and are more therapeutic than shrinks because they don't judge. They allow you to sink your troubles into their soft and creamy and crunchy richness.

The science behind these junk foods has long been proven. Most of the food stuffs that belong in this category are highly-processed and pre-packed items that are loaded with simple sugars. When you eat sugar-laden foods, your body easily digests them, flooding you with that energy boost commonly referred to as the "sugar high." For a time, you feel great, happy and relaxed. However, because they are so easy to digest, they get used up just as easily too. As a result, you experience a "crash" where you will feel lethargic, depressed and sad. To perk you up again, you reach for another piece of chocolate or another donut and drink another can of soda. The cycle continues until you are already full to bursting at the seams.

Comfort foods, unfortunately, are far from comforting. With every pastry you munch on, every chocolate you chew, fat slowly gets deposited into your body. Cholesterol, a common ingredient in these products clog your arteries causing plaque to build up and narrowing down its passage. This puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke. And the salt content from all those chips? You can expect your body to retain water, make you bloat and again, put you at greater risk for heart disease.

These foods are the ultimate betrayers. They offer themselves to you willingly, looking like heaven-sent angels out to comfort you in your time at need. But their purpose is far more sinister. Once they gain entry into your body and start giving you all those bulges that's when you realize that their ultimate purpose is to make you fat, unhealthy and ugly.

Think about it: What would you gain if you continue to fool yourself into thinking that these foods are your allies? Nothing, except for the fact that you'll look like a bloated balloon the next time you meet your ex. No one dreams of such an encounter.

So if you happen to find yourself in this situation, don't get caught in the "comfort food" routine. There is no such thing. Face the heartache. Have a good cry about it then let go. Put on your trainers, go jogging and go dancing with friends. If you must pig out, do it on fruits and vegetables. A little meditation puts things in perspective too.
