After graduating from a beautician education program, the thought of a teenager finding a good position can be daunting. Fortunately, many opportunities exist for qualified candidates who possess a certificate from a high school or vocational-technical program. Many are able to use the tutor saliba learning method in beauty school to learn the trade without having to attend college. Finding a steady job makes these students productive members of society.
Salon Beautician
A good place to start job-hunting is the larger salon franchises. Usually several have openings with positions available ranging from hair stylists to makeup artists. It's important to love working with people and have excellent technique. Flexibility is also required, both in customer service and in scheduling. Once well established, it's possible to work up to franchise manager.
Long-Term Care Beautician/Hairdresser
For senior citizens who are residents in long-term care, few things brighten their day as much as a trip to the hairdresser. A touch of lipstick and a permanent wave can make someone feel beautiful. Along with excellent customer service skills and a great deal of compassion and patience, this position requires someone who is comfortable working with all different hair types.
Cruise Line Beautician
One of the key elements of a blissful cruise is the opportunity to relax and get pampered in the on-deck spa. For someone looking for the opportunity to travel and meet interesting people, this would be an ideal position. A beautician on a cruise ship would be required to provide a number of different services, including manicures and pedicures, hand and scalp massages, hair services including cutting, coloring and styling and makeup artistry. Often skin wraps, facials and other specialty spa services are available as well and the cruise line beautician should be proficient in all of these.
Cosmetics Counter Specialist
A beautician who possesses excellent customer service skills should consider working at the beauty counter at specialty department stores. Major beauty supply brands hire beauticians to give potential customers makeovers to encourage them to buy the products being sold. This job requires excellent communication skills and the ability to make customers feel beautiful. It is necessary to be able to stand all day and be available to work variable hours. Benefits often include discounts on the company's products.
Nail Technician
Specialty manicure and pedicure boutiques are springing up on every corner. A skilled beautician who loves doing nail care should have no problem securing a position making customer's fingers and toes beautiful. Along with great customer service skills, a nail tech needs to be familiar with the products currently on the market and current techniques. Other services commonly offered by a nail spa include hand and foot massages and paraffin wax treatment.
