Coving is a form of wall decoration or molding that generally goes between walls and ceilings. This kind of item comes at easily affordable consumer prices at a variety of locations.
If you are interested in purchasing this item for your walls the following are some things you should keep in mind:
Variety of Styles:
There are a wide variety of styles in which to purchase coving. They come in many different types of patterns and formats. They are often contoured or sculptured in various ways. They may, for instance, be beveled into concave or convex surfaces giving them an attractive, fluid appearance. They may also have repeating patterns such as circles, leaf shapes, criss cross designs or other pictorial representations.
Your best bet in finding a pattern that you like is to get a general idea of the look you want initially and then look through the available designs either on a website or in a showroom. Select one that works for you or matches most closely the design you had in mind.
Price:
This item may be priced by the cove piece or by the linear meter of the material. It can range quite markedly based on the price, so take a look at all the price ranges to get a sense of what works for your budget.
Material:
High end cove pieces are often made from hardwood, but increasingly more economical and easy to care for options are available. These are often made from some material like polyurethane. Cove made from synthetic materials like this can also be carved much more easily than wood with razor knives and other diy tools designed for whittling and shaping.
If you do elect to go with wood, you have the option of either going to a commercial home centre or a lumber dealer/wood mill. The latter will most likely be the somewhat more expensive option but often these kinds of dealers have some very nice designs to choose from.
Painted or Unpainted:
Cove strips may come already painted and ready to install or they may come in their unpainted, unfinished form. If you buy wooden cove, especially from a direct dealer like a lumber yard or wood mill, chances are it will need to be primed and painted by you, the homeowner. Often cove that you will find at home improvement centres, especially that made out of synthetic materials, will be pre-painted a generic white or possibly some other colour. You will probably still be able to paint this some other desired colour if you wish.
Where to Find Cove Material:
Cove material can be found, as suggested above, at home centres, lumber yards, and wood mills. You may even be able to find private artisans who make and sell their own cove designs. A great way to determine the range of what is available is to shop online for cove items. Often websites can furnish you with pictures of the cove types available, allowing you to make a good stylistic selection. Shopping online reduces time expenditure and transportation costs so this kind of shopping makes sense from a number of different perspectives.
