To increase the speed of reading, there are many tools available on online speed reading websites. Many people want to increase speed of reading due to compelling factors like having to go through large volumes of study material, thick novels, and other books and journals of interest. During school, students are asked to stand up and read aloud in the class. This is done to ensure that the students have a good flow and speed of reading. Still some people are slow and remain so throughout the school life. This creates a problem in college and university when students have to study and comprehend lots of written work in form of books and notes.
Websites Have Speed Reading Tools
Speed reading does not mean only being able to read at great speed, but also the person should understand, comprehend, and memorize important portions while reading. Many techniques have been applied by scholars to achieve this goal; latest is the speed reading software and tools available on various online speed reading sites. The websites have online tools like Meta guiding, audio tests, visual scan enlargement, skimming, regression, and sub-vocalization.
Some popular speed reading techniques include going through the structure of the reading material. When your aim is not to memorize or go into details but just to get a general information and overview of a topic, reading the introduction and conclusion of a topic is good enough. If this generates interest, you may speed-read the whole article for details.
Another technique is to chunk or group a number of words. Our brain processes a group of words or events together. Therefore, if we practice to chunk three to four words at a time or sometimes a small sentence at a time, this increases the speed reading and promotes comprehension of the material.
While Reading, Use Hand Motions
In primary school students are taught to read by pointing the words with a pencil or marker. This technique is effective as the eye is able to focus more easily on the words and does not dart from one portion of the page to another. Skipping common words like "the," "a," "an," "to," and many more increases the speed greatly. All a reader has to do is to practice these skipping these words everyday and then to see if the comprehension is the same and if he is able to understand the text fully.
Scanning and reviewing are two very effective online speed reading techniques. In this, you must scan the whole document first, reading just the title, subtitles, pictures, and visuals. This will give a fairly good idea about the content of the article. After that give the text one more review for keywords. Then keep the text aside. When you go back to the text after a week or so, you will see that you are able to retain quite a lot.
Last but not the least, we look at the improved vocabulary technique. In this, if you know large number of words, you will not get stuck because of unfamiliar words, and comprehension will be better. The online speed reading techniques are very effective and the websites have many tests designed to see the progress for you
Speed reading is a necessity for higher studies and several professions. There are many online speed reading tools available on dedicated websites. These help improve a person's speed of reading. Some simple techniques like skimming, chunking, and skipping words can be applied to increase the speed of reading.
