The choices available in computer laptop backpacks will amaze you. But let me be frank. There are some really good, some really bad and some that are just nasty. You don't want to make a mistake and waste your cash. Wouldn't you agree.

At the top of the pack, in my opinion, are Swissgear products. They are the same guys famous for making the Swiss Army Knife, quality product with a quality reputation. That in itself says a lot.

So what makes these backpacks so good. Why buy a Maxxum?

Before I answer this question be aware, be very aware. Maxxums do not allow storage of 17 inch or more laptops. Do not ignore this please. The end result will be a waste of cash. Should you be lucky enough to have the bigger laptop a Swissgear Ibex will accommodate this. Different design but the same quality and similar suitable functionality. No problem.

There is a pod along the spine of the backpack that your laptop fits in to. What makes it so good is that it is made out of patented shock absorbing material that has a clasp to secure your machine in place. Any sudden movement or bangs, bumps or bashings means that your machine is largely protected, after all this is one of the primary reasons you would want one of these.

The strapping system is very comfortable. In all the time I have owned the bag, just over 8 months, have a felt discomfort caused by the straps digging in to my shoulder blades or back. The straps are made of the same shock absorbent system as the pod. A quick release system is attached which allows ultra fast tightening as well. Very handy if you need to get the pack off in a hurry.

Pockets galore. The largest pocket is in the center of the bag and is ideal for big items that do not need to be secured all the time. Mouse, leads, plugs and general peripherals. Another front zipped compartment for items that need additional security with a smaller, zipped compartment inside this. This further pocket is ideal for your passport and other important documents.

Down near the bottom of the bag on each side there are a further 2 pockets (either side) which can be used for carrying your water bottles.

Lastly a mention of cost as I know that this will be in the forefront of your mind. Around $70 or so however I prefer to think more in terms of value for money as an out and out cost and, believe you me, this is value for money.

If someone asks me whether I would buy another Swissgear backpack? The answer is a resounding YES.
