Converting an attic is one of the best ways to make use of empty space. Some require more work than others, but with some careful planning and thought, remodeling the attic adds value and comfort to a home. Most attics have some sort of existing subflooring, sturdy walls, electricity and solid roofing. It will probably need ventilation, heating and cooling, a change in insulation, solid floors and a ceiling. Adding walls for room divisions is optional, depending on how the attic space will be used. With help from an experienced residential remodeling contractor, the attic can be transformed into a warm and inviting part of the home. The space can be divided into three or four rooms for different purposes or left as one or two large areas to maximize the advantage of a large space. Here are 10 ideas on how to use existing attic space through a home remodeling project.
- Home Office
Many companies are offering their employees the opportunity to work from home. This saves the employee commuting time and transportation expenses. They will need a quiet designated area to work uninterrupted to make it work.
- Studio Apartment
For the college student or recently separated child moving back home, independence is often an issue. A separate living space with a bathroom, kitchenette, bed and computer center is helpful in keeping up with studies.
- Bedrooms
As families grow, they need more bedroom space. While siblings can share, it is easier and more peaceful to put them in their own rooms when space is available.
- Playroom
Play time is important, and having the room for active games and entertainment is a helpful way to stimulate a child’s brain and imagination. Room for physical activity is important, too, especially on rainy days.
- Entertainment Center
Family time or time away is frequently spent with movies, music, gaming and other forms of entertainment. While one group is enjoying themselves in the living room or den, another can be having fun upstairs in the entertainment center.
- Exercise Room
Rather than spending money on membership at the gym, setting up equipment at home is less expensive and more convenient in the long run. It is available for all household members and will assist with healthy living and weight loss, if needed.
- Green Room
Plant lovers can take over the attic with sunlamps, green plants and home-grown fruits and vegetables. A skylight can be added to the room for extra sunshine.
- Craft/Hobby Room
Crafts and hobbies, such as woodworking, sewing and wreath making, take up a lot of space. They sometimes take over garages and dining rooms to the point that they cannot be used. Adding a hobby room in the attic will relieve the clutter and inconvenience placed on the other rooms while giving the crafter a creative outlet.
- Storage
Sometimes the attic is just the best place for storage. Put in a solid, sturdy floor to hold the boxes and excess furniture. Add shelves and ventilation to make it practical and organized.
- Homeschool
Many families are turning to homeschooling. One problem is the lack of space for students to learn at home. It should be in a designated area, rather than regular living space, to foster better learning. An attic conversion can be the ideal place for parents and their children to teach and to learn.
