When homes are subjected to strong winter snowstorms followed by violent spring rainstorms, it is important to clean up the roofing, deck and gutter systems as soon as possible. Allowing leaves, broken branches and tree debris to accumulate in the gutters or on the sundeck can lead to more serious problems down the road. This might also be a good time for homeowners to consider a gutter protection system. The local home improvement contractor that also offers handyman services is a practical solution to tackling all of these issues at once. This way, home exterior repairs can be done before any further damage occurs, and any home additions or changes can begin as soon as they are finished.
Gutters
In regions that have many large trees with many leaves, buds, nuts and seeds in both fall and spring, the gutters can fill with debris nearly any time of the year. This is especially true in the Mid-Atlantic region where oaks, maples and sycamores are common and leaf clean-up is not a once-a-year job. Gutter guard systems are shields placed over the open gutters to prevent debris from piling up. When the gutters are full, water from rain and snowstorms cannot flow properly into the drainage system and out through the downspouts. This can cause water damage and wood rot to the fascia and soffits. It can also cause ceiling leaks in the home’s interior.
Decks
Spring and winter storms can damage sundecks, too. Falling branches or large blowing debris, such as lawn chairs and trash cans, can cause broken railings and deck flooring. Whether they are cracks or splintered pieces of wood, it is best to have them repaired or replaced before anyone gets hurt in the unstable area. Continual battering by Mother Nature on decking can cause the sealant to wear. Cleaning and sealing a deck will prolong its lifespan and protect it from the next round of storms. Unprotected wood can begin to rot and deteriorate. Home remodeling and handyman experts can blend in deck repairs to the existing decking.
Windows
Other victims of winter and spring storm damage on a home’s exterior are often the windows. Any window molding, trim and shutters should be repaired before the next round of storms comes to create further problems. When the damaged window area is left as is, water can seep into the home’s exterior, creating moisture damage on top of any structural damage. If the windows or glazing are worn or failing, the contractor may be able to put in replacement windows as well.
