In looking after real-life "Nemo" or anemone fish or clownfish requires extra treatment. They live on warm waters of Pacific ocean and Indian Oceans. Although they are territorial fish and tend to guard the sea anemone and reefs that they are living in, they normally get along with other types of fish that makes them as a great addition to the aquarium tank.
-
In choosing a tank for the clownfish, you must select a large one considering that saltwater fish needs extra space compared to fresh water fish. It’s recommended to get 30-gallon aquarium to make a blooming environment to your clownfish.
-
Be sure that you buy those tank-bred clownfish rather than those that were captured from captivity.
The fish might die if they’re from the wild due to the stress brought by the capture and shipping.
When choosing your clown fish, always make sure that the one that you will buy has bright colored scales, very clear eyes, active and alert, and doesn’t have signs and symptoms of white spots. It’s best that you choose the young anemone fish so that you won’t have trouble if you try to breed them. However if you would like to breed them, you should try buying the paired one.
-
Seek advice from an aquarium technician or perhaps educated pet shop worker for lighting and filter advice for your fish. A big filtration system is advisable to make sure that the fish tank is clean and is filtered correctly. Be sure to make weekly water changes for at least 10% of the total amount of water. A timer for lighting can be great so your fish will get the routine of sunlight and also darkness.
-
Find the proper fish food for your clownfish. Feed the fish in a certain time each day having a combination of flakes and frozen food. Keep in mind that this fish should get good vitamins and nutrients so it is going to be healthy and balanced.
-
Keep the temperature of the aquarium between 24 to 28 degrees Celsius or 76 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, as well as the salinity levels between 1.020 and 1.026. It will help your clown fish feel more at home, considering they are tropical fish.
-
Place stones or marine anemone inside the tank and be sure that there are going to be a lot of hiding areas. As a result the fish feel more secure and feel home in the tank. However, sea anemone is not really needed inside the tank if you don’t have potential predators inside your tank.
-
Don’t crowd the fish tank with several types of fishes. Clown fish likes the place to be peaceful. Overcrowding of the tank leads to stress and illness for the clownfish. If you plan on breeding it, the fish needs to be free from stress simply because stressed fish won't lay eggs.
-
It is best to observe your fish if it has any different behavior or has a disease or health problems. You need to have a knowledge about what diseases will be present in a clownfish to be able to identify it and treat it before it gets more serious.
