Known for its 18th century one cell prison called "The Cage" and for its numerous coaching inns, the small market town of Buntingford is also a civil parish, part of the district of East Hertfordshire and a county of Hertfordshire in England. Its location on the River Rib and the Roman road Ermine Street helps us get a better view of the staging post the small town used to be in Roman times.
Buntingford is a high point of interest for geography passionate, due to the fact that it is passed by the Prime Meridian, in the eastern part of the town. The origin of the word "Buntingford" is thought to be "Bunta", the Saxon chieftain or tribe that is part of the town's history. No confusions should be made upon the connection between the name of the tribe and Bunta, the bird or the name of the festive flag-like decorations, as there is none. Traditionally located within the parish of Layston, the town of Buntingford holds a lot of treasures, such as St Bartholemew's Church which was originally located in Layston and which is currently derelict, lying half a mile to the north-east of the town. Also, Buntingford Manor House, Red House or Buntingford almshouses are other examples of mediaeval or Gerogian buildings; the explanation for the presence of these buildings can be traced back in ancient times, when Buntingford was a stop-over between Cambridge and London, currently the A10.
The town later became a commuter town, hence the impressive growth in population, reaching almost 5,000 people according to a recent census. The fact that the Bovis Estate rose in 1990 thanks to the hard work of the Bovis housing firm that was responsible for its birth contributed to the appearance of other important public houses and buildings as well. The Vicarage Road, Monks Walk, Kingfisher Park, Freman Drive, Snells Mead and Downhall Ley are such examples of housing estates that were similar to the Bovis Estate.
The town is twinned with Luynes, France, which is why its main road is named Luynes Rise. Buntingford is also twinned with Olvega, Spain. Probably the most impressive building in Buntingford is the Anglican Church and former relief chapel of St Peter's, which is renowned for its unique brick building originating from the 17th century, in the age of the Puritans. There are also churches that serve the Roman Catholic community, such as St Richard's Church, or the United Reformed Church, which is located on Baldock Road.
Due to the fact that the old parish is a market town, the residents have chosen Mondays as their market days, with an early close on Wednesdays. This is reasons for most residents to come together each week; plus, the Carnival that takes place every other year in Buntingford is another old tradition of the town, which brings together both residents and tourists.
Market day is Monday, and early closing Wednesday while the Buntingford Carnival is held every other year. Sainsbury's Anglia Distribution Centre is housed by the small town, together with its many pubs: Fox and Duck, The Black Bull, The Crown or The Jolly Sailors.
